This week the VRL Summer Trophy moved to FIA GT. No less than 29 drivers had been able to get their sponsoring budget together for a race on the classic Belgian track. Part of the field had taken part in the BES race here last year, and their experience showed in the qualifying session. BES race winner Wilfred van den Brink took poleposition in his Lamborghini Murcielago, followed by Robin Verdegaal, Tim Vanhee and Martin de Graaf in the Porsche 996 Turbo’s.
When the lights went green van den Brink and Verdegaal took off in the distance, while de Graaf secured a solid 3rd place. SFH driver Offermans put in a great qualifying lap and started from sixth place, and would drive a flawless race, while Erwin Zwart had a short and troublesome race from 29th place. Halfway the race, championship contender Michalewski had a troublesome period but recovered to finish where he started, in 7th place.
At the pitstops de Graaf chose not to change tires, which would cost him 3rd position and the lead in the championship. The fourth Porsche, driven bij SFH’s András Király, had an accident during qualification and started from the back of the grid. Király however put in an epic performance, passing de Graaf and Vanhee for 3rd place with five laps to go! With two SFH cars (and three drivers) on the podium, and Verdegaal new leader by two points in the championship standings, Spa was a very good race for Simracing For Holland.
